MAIPSE Historical Timeline

  • In 2023 Mass College of Liberal Arts, Greenfield Community College, and Quinsigamond Community College were awarded planning grants.
  • Salem State Salem State establishes residential life option for eligible students. Four students move in Fall 2022.
  • Governor Baker signs bill MA State Legislators expand MAICEI to students with ID, DD and other developmental disabilities over the age of 22 who want to attend college. New regs also require that all MA public institutes of higher education establish guidelines to support eligible students.
  • Over 2500 students have participated in MAICEI since 2007. Over 30 students have participated in residential life opportunities since 2016 Bridgewater State creates two new self-sustaining tracks with private pay options: EXCEL Certificate and EXCEL Transition
  • Johann The COVID pandemic sent everyone home including the 200+ college students supported by MAICEI program. The majority of the students were able to complete their courses using learning management systems, assistive technology and coaching support.
  • EXCEL BSU 208 students served across 15 active MAICEI partnerships. 104 school districts have participated in MAICEI Bridgewater State renames their work Excel Partnership.
  • Inclusive residential life at BSU Over 1200 students have participated in inclusive academic and campus activities through MAICEI. school district participation increases from 29 active partnerships in FY10 to 59 in FY16. Over 200 students participating in MAICEI this year. MAICEI partnerships are now in half of the 26 MA institutes of higher education. Salem State awarded a planning grant. Bridgewater State awarded planning grant funds to begin planning for residential life opportunities.
  • TCT action research group College program coordinators, transition coordinators and educational coaches from Westfield State, Holyoke CC and Bridgewater State form collaborative workgroups and co-author training materials that support the college-based transition services model.
  • Windmill Institute for Community Inclusion receives federal funding to determine what makes up critical components of college-based transition services. Project staff collaborate with partners from Holyoke College College, Westfield State University and Bridgewater State University to discuss and revise implementation.
  • MassBay Community College and Holyoke Community College are now self-sustaining programs.
  • Bridgewater State Bridgewater State University completed its 2nd full semester of implementation, in partnership with 10 school districts, supporting 17 students. UMass Boston restarts the initiative under new leadership, supporting 7 students
  • Westfield students Professor Trudy Knowles takes students from her Education courses to the State of the Art on Postsecondary Ed for Students with Disabilities. They learn about MAICEI and advocate for their university's participation. As a result, Westfield State University submits and is awarded a planning grant.
  •  October 2011 testimony Chapter 68 of the Acts of 2011 introduces several new features to the Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment line item to further address sustainability, best practices, parent engagement, employment and tuition waivers.
  •  Joey with emergency care book Six institutes of higher education and 28 school districts are actively partnering to provide college-based transition services
  • Eight public institutes of higher education and 20 partner school districts respond to a request for proposals and are awarded grant funds to support 31 eligible transition-aged students with severe disabilities
  • MA state house MA State Legislators pass Chapter 182 of the Acts of 2008 Inclusive Concurrent Enrollment Partnership Programs for Students with Disabilities to offer inclusive concurrent enrollment opportunities to students identified with severe disabilities.
  • MAC logo Massachusetts Advocates for Children organizes statewide stakeholder group to review status of transition services and innovative practices. Results in legislative advocacy for inclusive dual enrollment opportunities for transition-aged students with high intensity needs.
  • lindsey walking to class Worcester Youth College Career Connection supported students with intensive needs to include college in their transition services.
  • Institute for Community Inclusion The Massachusetts-based College Career Connection project from ICI supported 40 students with intensive support needs to participate in an inclusive postsecondary education experience at community college.
